Al-Mumit: Change of Form

Have you passed through
the times of fana,
the little deaths of ideas
of projects and relationships
of vocations and loves?
Then you know the word
“through” is a truth—
death of any kind is a transition,
a doorway,
the note of a resurrection hanging
already in the air.
“Die before you die” the Hadith says,
so you can trust in the wild swing of the sun,
north to south to north
to the cry of baby birds in once snow-covered nests,
so you can be daring in the way the moon waxes and wanes
and then once again falls soft on your pillow
when you are brave enough
to pull back the curtain
