Al-Wa’li: Loving Self-Discipline

I watch how she moves through her day-
devotions first,
then gentle stretches
(better than fiber she says,
to awaken those bowels),
put away the dishes,
it all flows in an ever-repeating predictability
that, for her,
is part of inner calming.
I know the chaos that lives in us all-
my friend called it “cities in the mind”
bustling, clanging, howling,
and sometimes,
we can only catch and share the stillness
by creating an intentional rhythm,
a sound box,
a bowl.
