Al-Badi’: Childlike Wonder

It’s that moment an instant before
just that childlike turning toward everything
without expectation, analysis
or even language,
the impulse to paint before
you even have the canvas,
the echo of a melody’s shadow in your head
when the flute is clear across the room,
the cry for your friend,
before you realized
a tear had run down the side of your nose.
If the moment before the Big Bang
could be named,
it would be this:
