Gospel of Thomas: Yeshua's Vedanta, Logion 82

Logion 82

Yeshua says,

Whoever comes
close to me
dwells near fire.
Whoever moves away from me
remains far from the kingdom.

                                 Translation:  Lynn Bauman in
The Gospel of Thomas: Wisdom of the Twin

The First Response:

Even wrapped in my winter blanket,
I can feel it,
the way the sun slants now
brilliant
through my makeshift curtain of prayer shawls.
My small black dog stretches in that
warm luxury,
the light catching its share of gray and browns
in her painfully shining fur.
When she grows aware of my stare,
she yawns and in her mouth
the universe unfolds,
endless fires
waiting to cook me
until I am
completely
un-done.

 Journey through Logos:

The positive associations with fire—the teaching circle in which we gather, the light, the warmth, the ability to transform hard vegetable and meat into sustenance for our bodies—these are the gifts that Yeshua hints at.  It is a much more dynamic version of the communion table, the fire of transformation unveiled and spoken out clearly and honestly.
And those who cannot face that light, that heat, that transformation?  They will be far from the experience of heaven all around and within us.  Because Yeshua realizes that for some, changing the way they see and understand reality feels like they themselves are being burned away, feel like the food has become charcoal, that the light is so blinding that their eyes water and they turn away.  At the deepest level, the fire followed him to the cross when he cried “Father, why have you forsaken me?” and then finally and forever cooked him into the perfect heart that went far beyond the “me”.

Hokmah’s Symphonic Note:

“Remain still, with the conviction that the Self shines as everything yet nothing, within, without, and everywhere.”

 Ramana Maharshi

Practicing Unity:
In what way do you avoid the “cooking” of being near your best image and lens of the divine?  What does that feel like when you are far way in your actions and thoughts from the divine Mystery?

Hokmah’s Gnosis:

We reign when we fully surrender to the light, heat and transformation that is the heart of the spiritual journey.
